Introducción a Aveiro
Aveiro
cuenta con el testimonio escrito de su existencia desde 959, en el testamento
de la condesa Mumadona Días con la referencia de las salinas de Aveiro.
La
producción de sal, muy valorada por sus cualidades para la conservación de los
alimentos, y la situación geográfica convirtieron en un centro comercial de
importancia a Aveiro.
En
el siglo XV, el infante Dom Pedro, Duque de Coímbra promueve la construcción de
la muralla y de monumentos, la muralla
fue demolida en el siglo XIX, para reaprovechar sus piedras en las obras de la
barra.
En
1434 el rey Dom Duarte, le otorgó la celebración anual de una feria franca, que
se mantiene hasta hoy en día, desde el 25 de Marzo al 25 de Abril.
La
instalación en 1472 de la Princesa Dona Joana, Santa Joana, hermana del rey Dom
Joao II, trajo notoriedad al convento y por extensión a la villa de Aveiro.
Con
la época de los descubrimientos, Aveiro adquirió un importante papel en el
desarrollo económico del país.
En
Agosto de 1515 el Rey Dom Manuel, otorga carta foral a Aveiro y durante el
reinado de Felipe II fue agraciada con el titulo de Vila Notável.
Con
la construcción de la Barra Nova, en 1808, el progreso del lugar vive un nuevo
impulso. Con la llegada del ferrocarril la ciudad se convierte en un núcleo de
comunicaciones.
Este
desarrollo económico favoreció un nuevo ordenamiento urbanístico, que se
conserva hoy en día y donde destacan las casas de Arte Nova y las revestidas
con azulejos que le imprimen un carácter colorido y alegre a la ciudad.
